Weekly Update 9/17/09

Oregon Coast
The color change is just starting. Look for yellowing big leaf maples and a few red shrubs through the central and northern Coast Range. The southern Coast Range is mostly green.

Willamette Valley
The color change is just starting. The best colors are in the higher elevations of the Cascades where the vine maples are turning red. Drive Hwy 242 to see red vine maples in ancient fields of black lava. Big leaf maples in the lower elevations are just starting to turn yellow.

Greater Portland
The color change is just starting. The city is still green, with hints of yellow on the tree tops.

Mt. Hood/Columbia River Gorge
The color change is just starting in the Mt Hood Territory. The color change has not started in the Columbia River Gorge.

Southern Oregon
The color change has not started for most of Southern Oregon. However, many otherwise barren landscapes of Crater Lake National Park are currently crimson with Newberry knotweed, which is a low groundcover that provides this typically evergreen landscape with brilliant splashes of color.

Central Oregon
The color change is just starting. Central Oregon is still enjoying days that are in the mid-80’s, but the evenings are getting cooler.  Aspen, maples, burning bush and other foliage are just now showing hints of fall color.

Eastern Oregon
The color change has not started for most of Eastern Oregon.  The aspen are just starting to change in the Steens.
